Pelagic Life Open Water Encounters
Our Open Water Encounters begin with an early morning pick up at your hotel or previously arranged location and taken to where our comfortably equipped boat will be ready and waiting for you. (Pick-up and drop-off times will be arranged prior to booking this expedition.)
We will take our time as travel deep out onto the Pacific Ocean to look for the ocean currents that carry the phytoplankton, which is the fundamental food for many different species of schooling fish such as flying fish, caballa and sardines to feed on. And in turn attract the larger predatory fish, mammals and sea birds that feed on these schools.
Sometimes mega pods consisting of several species of cetaceans congregating in the hundreds for defense and feeding are found. This is a truly stunning and breathtaking experience and something you will never forget.
The pelagic zone means relating to or living in or on oceanic waters away from shore and not close to the bottom. This zone begins at the low tide mark and includes the entire oceanic water column. The pelagic ecosystem is largely dependent on the phytoplankton inhabiting the upper, sunlit regions, where most of the ocean organisms live.
It is often common to see different types of dolphins such as pantropical spotted dolphin, bottlenose and the rare spinner dolphins which can be found in mega pods of up to 4000 strong. You will also have the opportunity to see different species whales, tuna, manta rays, sailfish, sea turtles, as well as many different types of sea birds such as boobies, frigate birds, petrels, shearwaters and more.
