Whale Watching &
Bioacoustics Expedition

Listen to the songs of humpback whales in the waters of Marino Ballena National Park
Experience the songs of giants.
This unique marine expedition combines traditional whale watching with the fascinating science of whale bioacoustics, offering guests the rare opportunity to both observe and listen to humpback whales in their natural environment.
The Experience
We depart early in the morning from Marino Ballena National Park to explore the coastal waters of Costa Rica’s South Pacific, a region visited seasonally by migrating humpback whales.
These magnificent marine mammals travel thousands of miles each year to reach the warm tropical waters of Costa Rica where they breed, give birth, and nurse their calves.
What makes this expedition particularly unique is the use of a hydrophone—an underwater microphone that allows us to listen to whale vocalizations in real time.
While navigating the marine park, your naturalist guide will deploy the hydrophone so guests can hear the complex songs produced by male humpback whales beneath the surface.
Your guide will explain the fascinating science behind whale communication and marine bioacoustics, offering a deeper understanding of these extraordinary animals.
